Rhino poaching for their horns has been a severe issue for some time now. According to WWF, a pound of Rhino horn sells for $132,000, because of the common beliefs that a Rhino horn is the ailment to many incurable diseases. Poachers kill these animals just to get their 2 to 3-pound horns. These species which have been around for millions of years are now critically endangered worldwide because of the massive poaching in Asia and Africa.
Numerous steps have been taken to eliminate the poaching but poachers always seem to find way around. The problem with the steps was that all the methods were reactive and there was no way of real-time tracking or surveillance. The technology used against poaching was tracking the Rhino’s with trackers or using tiny cameras in their horns. But recently a well-known technology company came together to find a solution for the criminals and the poachers.
South Africa is now home to the remaining 70% of the total Rhinos in the world. So, to protect these magnificent animals, in an unnamed game reserve near the Kruger National Park, a Connected Conservation System has been established. The new tracking method completely focuses on the people rather than the animals, so that the Rhinos, along with other animals can roam free, as they should. With this newly established system, the law enforcement agencies responsible for the park can analyze data in real time and be exactly at the spot before a poacher kills another animal.
